Dear Representative/Senator,

I am deeply concerned about Bush administration efforts to weaken the Clean Water Act.  I urge you to do all in your power to stop this attack and defend America’s clean water protections.  The Bush administration is on the verge of rewriting Clean Water Act rules to eliminate all federal prohibitions against polluting, filling, and degrading many streams, wetlands, ponds and other waters.  As your constituent, I ask you to oppose this effort to dismantle the law that has safeguarded our nation’s waters for over 30 years.

Recently, 218 Representatives and 25 Senators sent letters to President Bush asking that he halt efforts to reduce the scope of Clean Water Act safeguards for the country’s waters.  These letters oppose a policy and rulemaking effort launched by U.S. EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers in January 2003 that seeks to undo federal protections for many of the nation's streams, wetlands, ponds and other waters.

I hope that you were one of the Members of Congress who signed these letters.  If so, I thank you and ask you to redouble your efforts to protect the nation’s waters.

If you did not join your colleagues in signing one of these important letters, I ask you to either add your voice to those who are publicly speaking in defense of the nation’s waters, or publicly state your reasons for not doing so and and tell me and your other constituents which of our community’s waters you think should lose federal protection from toxic pollution, oil spills, mining waste, or unchecked filling by developers.

Please do all you can to ensure the Clean Water Act continues to protect of all of our nation's waters.
